"I fucking HATE writing music reviews. Jesus, who reads these anyway?
And of those people who read music reviews, how many among them actually take the recommendations onboard and get the record?
It’s an exercise in futility. Nothing good can come of it.
But let’s pretend you’re the exception. You, the reader, are going to take onboard what I say in these paragraphs, get off your ass and get the new “I Will Take You Hunting” LP.
Fat chance but I’ll let you prove me wrong.
Two weeks ago I went to my postbox and inside was a woefully flimsy cardboard mailer with a vinyl test pressing inside. The label was from Scotland. I’m in Australia. That’s literally the opposite side of the world. This package couldn’t have travelled a further distance. And the rocket scientist who packed it couldn’t have prepared it worse for the journey. The fact it arrived in a playable state is a credit to the global postal service who somehow didn’t make the effort to snap the record in half somewhere on its journey.
But fucking hell, it’s here, let’s play it.
Immediately I’m drawn in. I’m always game to hear something fast and aggressive and this album ticks those boxes with a permanent sharpie. It’s smart – not slapdash – there’s a quality element to it; a caring and attention to detail that makes the difference between another punk band and something that can be really great. Songs are varied and sequencing is good. It’s an adventure. This band has somehow defied my preconceived scepticism and won me over.
By the way, I should clarify the package ONLY contained a record – no sleeve or lyrics or anything. It had the identity of a ransom note so I don’t know the names of songs or anything beyond the lyrics I can make out. That’s not a bad thing tho – I’m hearing what I want to hear so it’s like the record is talking to me.
Before this day I hadn’t heard of “I Will Take You Hunting”. Now, I’ve listened maybe 6-7 times. I keep flipping the record over, playing each side, then starting again. A solid record that will exceed most everyone’s expectations. The band is fun – promising in a way that makes me want to keep an eye out for them and hope beyond reason they’ll play in Australia one day. But until then, we’ll have to order their records and enjoy them remotely. Let’s hope they get as good at packaging records as they are at making them."
